The whole world is alseep at the wheel...

In a previous Blog we spoke about how we as individuals live our lives on auto-pilot. Our subconscious makes most of our decisions for us and we act and react according to what we believe to be true.

This is not unique to individuals and is in fact a glaring blight on society as a whole……

Core Beliefs and Automatic Thoughts can be part of a group of people, a religious group, a race of people, or a nation of people. This is how wars start, when a collective belief becomes an automatic belief and the collective rallies together to fight those who are different to our group beliefs.

Social Media is an excellent example of people’s subconscious automatic thoughts being expressed. Social Media communication lacks the temperance of face to face communication and hence the intent of messages can get lost without the addition of body language and physical contact for a message. Without these additional communication tools, much is left up to peoples interpretation of the message, and that interpretation is based on the receiver’s individual perception of the world.

On Social Media people feel they can judge others with little responsibility for the impact their judgements or words have. I hear people say that Social Media allows people to express their true selves, but it doesn’t. What it does is allow people to express their subconscious and distorted views of the world. Social Media seems to have led to more intolerance and judgement, than open communication.

But how do you change a society? By changing yourself. The core beliefs of societies or religions do not change overnight and in fact cannot be changed until a critical mass of individuals make the changes in themselves that are needed to make change in the whole group.

Be aware of your automatic thoughts about any experience you have. Remember to listen to the voice in your head, it is the gateway to your automatic thoughts. Understand that your subconscious will make an immediate and automatic judgement of a situation based on your past collective life experiences and your core beliefs.

When you become aware you are doing this, this is the first step towards gaining control of your attitudes and emotions. It is unlocking a door that has been barred to you, and is barred to most people most of their lives, and they just can’t see it.
