Turn the Other Cheek....I Think Not

The famous Parable about turning the other cheek is in my opinion a very poor lesson to teach a young person, especially when taken in its literal sense.

Turning the other cheek means not trying to fight hate with hate, which is a great lesson. However, we as humans always simplify things and in its literal sense it often gets taught as not responding to a bully, not standing up for your views and opinions, and simply being a doormat.

You need to develop the ability and the confidence to be able to voice your opinion, to stand up for your views…BUT…without turning that into an attack on the other person. It’s a delicate balance but is a crucial skill that some of our world leaders lack in spades at the moment.

The only thing turning the other cheek does is reinforce the ignorance of the bully who struck you on the cheek. Don’t be afraid to hold your opinion and defend your opinion…..just be careful you don’t feel you have to defend your opinion as a means of defending who you are as a person.

Can you see the difference?
