Take a Physical Inventory

Taking an ‘Honest’ inventory of our physical condition is a road fraught with deception and lies……

Note I said ‘Honest’. It’s interesting that when we take a mental inventory we tend to be hard on ourselves, negative, and don’t give ourselves much credit for strengths. But when we look at our Body and Nutrition we constantly fool ourselves about what we are eating, how much we are eating, our fitness levels, exercise consistency, and our general view of how good we are.

Why are we so negative on one element of our lives and yet seem to cut ourselves slack in another area?

For Old Boys it’s all about how we perceive a man should be in modern society. Its poor form to talk about your feelings and emotions, and makes you less of a man if you do. On the other hand it’s also considered unacceptable to talk yourself or your strengths up, especially the intangible mental and emotional strengths. But when it comes to body, the ego gets in the way. We don’t want to admit too much physical weakness. We are loathe to come to the realisation that we can’t do the physical things we used to be able to do. Our deep seated Survival Instinct has a need to confirm that we are strong, able to defend ourselves against harm, and can survive anything thrown at us.

If we are going to take an ‘honest’ physical inventory, we need to be conscious of the impact the ego and the survival instinct has on our subconscious. We need to be aware when we are fooling ourselves, and when we are distorting facts to suit our vision of who we think we are as a person.
