Limitations or Excuses

As we get into our 30’s, 40’s and beyond we start to have the odd niggle here and there, the knees aren’t what they used to be, shoulders get sore after training, and generally it all becomes a bit annoying.

This is the fork in the road. Will you let these niggles destroy your confidence and see you sitting on the couch talking about how good you once were? Or as the great philosopher Sgt ‘Gunny’ Highway once said, will you …..”Improvise…Adapt…Overcome”

There is nothing more pathetic than that guy who tells you about his old injuries constantly. How he was a top flight footballer and once smashed his knee into 20 pieces but managed to play out the game, got drunk, and then went to the hospital.

Don’t be that guy.

The biggest problem with this is your mindset. It’s easy to adapt exercises and reduce your weights to reduce stress on joints, but most men feel that this makes them ‘old’ or a lesser man if they can’t do the 100kg bench press they once did. So what’s the easy way out…….don’t do anything, use past injuries as your excuse, and tell everyone how good you used to be.

You must adapt your training. You must reduce the amount of weight you lift. You must change exercises to avoid aggravating old injuries. But none of this means a reduction in intensity. The Old Boys methodology to training is to reduce resistance through reduced weights, but increase intensity through reduced rest time. It also looks at shorter routines more consistently to combat our time poor lifestyles.
