Let’s talk about DUTY

As society’s freedoms have grown and we’ve become more and more connected over the last 100 years, society’s focus has shifted from responsibilities to rights. Now everyone has rights and they should be respected but every individual also has responsibilities, and it’s to the detriment of society and the individual when rights become more important than responsibilities.

There are ‘core’ rights that are enshrined and should be respected by all -

·        The right to food

·        Shelter

·        Health care

·        Education

·        And freedom of speech

Anything outside these core rights become wants and desires. But if you make this statement publically some people immediately complain and start to list all sorts of other rights, and I don’t deny that individuals see different kinds of rights as untouchable, but what are we trying to achieve here?

What we’re striving for as Old Boys is to live a meaningful life, live a strong life, live a full life. Anything more than the basic right to exist, tips into desires and wants, and these are subject to your attitude and a multitude of things not in your control, and when these wants and desires (rights) become more important than your responsibilities you become a victim. You look for people to blame, you look for reasons outside the self as to why your rights are not being respected.
