"Back in My Day".....Why This Saying Annoys Me
Few things make me despair more than when I hear someone say “Back in my day” and then compare why things were so much better, why they were that much tougher etc.
My first gripe with this revolves around the people who compare todays’ youth to themselves and how much worse kids are today than in their day. Have you forgotten all the times your parents said exactly the same thing about you when you were a kid. Nowadays it’s all about kids spending too much time on social media and they never get outside and play. When I grew up in the 70’s, TV and “Latch-key Kids” were the big societal downfalls of the time. TV was eroding kid’s brains, and the rise of latch-key kids, where both parents had to work to make ends meet, was so foreign to my parents’ generation that it was obvious the world was coming to an end.
But time moves on and we all grow up…
The comparison to “back in my day” is ultimately an inability for the person to deal with their life on a day to day basis. Things were so much better when they were kids. Well of course they were because you were a kid and didn’t have to worry about anything.
The world sucks sometimes and that is a scientific fact. Learn to accept what you can and can’t control and go with the flow rather living in the past.
