The Acceptance of Mediocrity for Excellence

One of the great scourges of modern society is the acceptance of mediocrity for excellence.

When I was at Boarding school a particular Brother used this phrase but it took me another 25 years to really start to understand what he meant.

From the Kardashian’s, to certain schools teaching children there are no winners and losers, to the media’s over dramatization of news stories and the overuse of adjectives to describe everyday occurrences,  it is a constant battle to find the next ‘thing’ that will boost ratings, or pander to a politically correct view. I sound like a Whinging Old Bastard I know, and maybe I am, but the reality of life is that there are winners and losers, there are exceptionally brave moments and there are ordinary situations that people face every day. The problem is that by Accepting Mediocrity for Excellence we downplay the great and over emphasise the mediocre so that great deeds lose their relevance and people or acts that deserve criticism escape any review that will make them better people, or prevent that situation from happening again.

Remember though that looking for other people who accept mediocrity for excellence and telling them they are wrong is of no use to anyone and will only highlight your intolerance as a human………….The solution can only ever be for you to NEVER accept anything mediocre that you do, as any form excellence.
