The Secret to Long Term Motivation?......Stop Trying

The hardest thing men have to come to grips with in their physical training, as they get older, is to realise they can’t do at 40 what they could do at 20.

So stop tyring…………..

I believe for men, it’s far harder to age mentally than physically. We used to be able to bench press so much, we could run 5km in that time, we were active with no aches and pains.

The only way to deal with this is to stop trying to break records every time you hit the gym. Now you won’t learn this lesson until you get a few injuries but if you don’t change your attitude from “being the biggest and strongest” to “being the biggest and strongest you can be”, then you will be doomed to repeated injury and a downward cycle of depression.

One simple tool I found helped with this process was to stop counting reps and listen to music instead. Counting reps is a habit formed over years of wanting to get stronger and bigger, but it’s a slippery slope when you pass the top of the bell curve and your physical ability starts to drop below your mental expectations.

I have a great playlist of music (mostly ACDC, but whatever floats your boat) and I set it up and I get into my 5 sets of a particular exercise. I don’t count reps and I work to the beat of the music where I can. It’s a simple strategy that I expand on in my Old Boys Health & Fitness Methodology but do yourself a favour and give it a try.

Crank up the music and lower the expectations…..
