Does your driveway go all the way to the street?

Don’t let your past define who you are. Don’t let your past be your story. Make sure your driveway goes all the way to the street.

I’ve often used the term over the years to describe someone who is distinctly strange as “Their driveway doesn’t go all the way to the street”.

As I’ve studied people and personalities I’ve realised that most people have a story about who they are. I don’t mean as in what job they do, what I mean is an emotional story. A martyr, a tough guy, an expert, a failure, a loser. These are all accompanied by those internal voices, “Everything I do fails”…”I do all the work around here and nobody appreciates it”…”I can’t do that”…”I’m just not that kind of person”.

These thoughts build up based on how you have perceived your life experiences to date, and they come together to create an image of who you think you are. This image then limits what you believe you can do. It stifles any notion of living a life worth living.

Just because you failed at something does not make you are a failure. But many people let the bad times become who they are. They like to tell stories of how bad a life they have had as they look for sympathy from others. It’s a natural reaction.

But when you become aware that you are defining who you are by where you’ve been and limiting what you can do in the future….then you realise your driveway doesn’t go all the way to the street.
