 Let’s talk about COURAGE

Courage is an overused word in modern society, so much so that it has lost its meaning. Modern media is constantly on the search for more and more extreme ‘news’, and as they run out of adjectives to describe the same things in a different way, they begin to promote mediocrity as excellence.

Courage is facing adversity and showing wise tenacity. It’s not simply about facing a physical foe, it’s about facing mental, emotional and physical challenges with dignity, while maintaining respect for others.

One thing courage is NOT, is acting on your responsibilities. You have a responsibility to treat people with respect. A responsibility to be a good citizen. A responsibility to your employer. It’s not courageous to act on these responsibilities. No matter what story you tell yourself, they are simply a baseline for living.

Physical courage is the most easily understood. The courage a soldier faces in battle is primal. To be able to keep your wits when you are faced with imminent danger is a special trait.

Principled Courage is standing up for what you believe in despite those about you disagreeing with or laughing at your stance.

Emotional courage is the least recognised of all the forms of courage, yet I believe is the greatest. It’s a huge issue for men in middle age. This is the courage to face your own demons. The courage to own up to your own weaknesses and to fight to change for the better. This type of courage is evident in everyday life yet we call it stress, anxiety and depression. The personal courage to constantly fight to be a better person sums up what the Old Boy Code is all about.
