Planning is Overrated
To plan is good…To make a start is better
I see this a lot in my profession as a Project Manager, guys who have the most detailed plans and risk management strategies in place to make sure they can mitigate every risk possible, but get caught in decision paralysis.
Now I’m not saying that planning is bad. The complete opposite is Management by Crisis, and that is just disastrous. But at some stage, you have to make a start. You will never foresee all the risks and in fact you won’t even know some of the risks exist until you suddenly bump up against them.
The key is to have an idea of where you want to go, identify the big “drop dead” risks, and then make a start. Be prepared to adjust the rudder as you go.
Whatever you want to do in life…Just make a start!
