Who was Marcus Aurelius and Why Does it Matter?
Modern life is confusing. Social media has us comparing our lives against people and things that we have no control over, with stress and anxiety waiting for us at every click of the social media button.
Men in particular have always had a hard enough time coming to terms with what “Being a Man” really means and that’s even more confusing today than ever.
Marcus Aurelius, one of the greatest Roman Generals and Emperors, has some answers.
Marcus Aurelius was the Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD. He was a successful military tactician who came from humble adoptive beginnings and became, at that time, the most powerful man in the world.
But what he is famous for is as one of the great Stoics of history. Stoicism, if you haven’t heard of it, is a Philosophy and way of viewing and living life that was founded over 2,000 years ago in ancient Greece. It has many similarities to Buddhism but comes from a far more practical base and is, in my opinion, something every modern man should study and understand. It was forged by warriors and generals who have seen some of the worst that humanity has to offer, and provides a very practical way to live your life as a man, that is more relevant today than ever in history.
Do yourself a favour and look into Marcus Aurelius and Stoicism.
