Don't mistake Opinions for Values

One of the great problems of humans, is that they unconsciously adopt their opinions as their values.

Understand the difference…it is critical to Living a Life Worth Living

Values are emotions, ways of behaving, and things we have taken the time to understand about ourselves and about how the world is. Values hold us to a personal Code of Conduct, they make you a better person to yourself and to others, despite what the world around gives us in response. Our values should be defended because they make the world a better place, simply by making you a better person.

Opinions are also emotions, ways of behaving, and your view on how the world is. The difference is opinions are not based on understanding, they are based on past experiences and how your primal fight or flight response tells you what will keep you safe. We seek and gravitate towards people with the same opinions as us because there is safety in numbers. We have to defend our opinions vigorously because if I’m right and you’re wrong, then I am stronger than you and have a better chance of survival.

Look very closely at what you call your values. The simple way to identify the difference between a Value and an Opinion is that Values make you a better person, Opinions make you better than someone else.
