Cover the World with Leather

There is an ancient Buddhist saying that goes something like –

“How do I cover the world with leather? Wear sandals on your feet”.

It’s a powerful message, but what does it mean?

It can be interpreted in many different ways, but in my version I see it in terms of people’s desires and goals. There is no way you could get together enough leather to cover the entire earth. Our major goals for ourselves and our own lives are beyond our ability to reach right now.  There are simply too many things outside your control.

But you can control what you do in the present moment, what shoes you wear on your feet. By acting on what you can control right now, is not the world covered in leather everywhere you go?

It means never let a major goal become overwhelming. Start with what you can control and take action. A small action now can have major consequences down the track.
