Evil Triumphs When Good Men Do Nothing... Or Does It?
“All that is required for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing”
I’ve seen this quote attributed to so many different people. I can’t be sure who originally said it, but like all things, humans have an innate ability to take a great sentiment and turn it to suit their own agenda.
The problem lies in an individual’s definition of what is “Evil” and what constitutes a “Good Man”.
Now I go back to one of my favourite thoughts and that is “There is no black and white, only shades of grey”. By using this analysis to look at Hitler and the Jewish genocide as an example, that situation was clearly evil…but there were then, and are now, plenty of people who saw it as “Good Men Doing Something”.
What about the United States view of themselves as the “Good Men”, the worlds’ policeman, and their continual crusade to bring democracy to other countries?
I just like to keep it very simple, and I am sure in line with what the person who originally said this intended
· If someone’s actions and thoughts are consciously aimed at hurting someone else, then it is at the evil end of the Black/White scale.
· If someone’s actions and thoughts are aimed at firstly making themselves a better more compassionate person, and at improving the lot of someone else…then that to me is a “Good Man”.
