Judgement…Right or Wrong?

As a society we seem to stand in judgement of others as a means of telling the world how good we are. It’s a basic survival mechanism.  When others have different opinions to ourselves we see it as a subconscious threat, and we feel the need to defend our opinion vigorously.

But is there room for judgment in our lives?

There are two schools of thought on judgement. The first says we shouldn’t judge others as we do not know their circumstances, and that judge not lest ye be judged. The second school suggests there is a moral code and there is a difference between good and bad, and this sets the parameters for judgement.

The first school of thought is the go to for spiritual growth and evolution. It is focused on the individual and ignores what can’t be controlled. This has great merit but if not lived consciously, can lead to the acceptance of circumstances that are detrimental to the individual or others. There are circumstances where an individual’s influence could be beneficial to the betterment of a situation. It can become selfish.

The second school aims to set moral codes for a community to live by. It focuses on the good of the greater community. The problem with this school is, who sets the moral codes? What is right and what is wrong? Just have a look at the great religions of the world…

My school of thought is based on the Middle Way. Life is not black and white, it is shades of grey. I believe the only way to make the world a better place is to make yourself a better person. Stop trying to control what others say and do, control the controllables. But you must set a Moral Code for yourself. Be clear to yourself what is right and what is wrong. Judge yourself based on that moral code. This doesn’t mean that you don’t get involved in the community and seek to create a better world, but…the second you start to judge others by your moral code, you have gone too far.
