Rock or Water?
There are two versions of the way you should live your life, either be a rock that is not disturbed by the crashing waves around it, or be like water that flows in and around the rocks.
So which is it?
Rock and Water could not seem like two more diametrically opposed analogies for the way to live our lives, but in fact they are the same thing.
The analogy of a rock is based on its’ stillness, not on its inability to move. The rock is surrounded by turbulent water and crashing waves, yet it remains unaffected by what is happening around it, by what is out of its’ control. It just sits and is a rock. It doesn’t change the nature of itself because of what is happening around it. It doesn’t try to stop the crashing surf, it simply allows it to crash around and over it, knowing that all things will pass in time.
The analogy of water is based on its’ ability to adapt without struggle. In this analogy the rocks are the obstacles in its path, but instead of resisting the obstacle, water just goes with the flow and finds its own path around the obstacle, without struggle, without chaos, without changing the nature of itself. The best (and most famous) analogy of water was given by Bruce Lee in an interview. If you have never seen it go to YouTube and type in “Bruce Lee Water Interview” and have a look.
The Rock and Water analogies are two sides of the same coin and it shows us how each of us is different, yet we can have the same end goal of trying, in our own way, to Live a Life Worth Living.
