My Spiritual Snooze Button

I’ve read so many stories about people who say they have had a life changing experience that set them on their spiritual path. It would seem they went from the depths of despair to spiritual guru almost overnight.

My spiritual journey has been more like waking up to an alarm on a Monday morning, and having to face work…I kept hitting the snooze button.

Even from my late teens I was always a goal setter but as for a spiritual path, that was in my opinion, the domain of hippies and weirdos. I reckon I was my late twenties when my “spiritual alarm” went off. It was quite a start at first, being jolted awake to realise that I had wasted the last 29 years on “stuff”. At first, I was keen to get up and get going on this journey but after a while I got sleepy again and hit the snooze button so I could stay in my comfort zone for a little while longer.

I hit the snooze button again and again during my thirties until the pain of staying in bed got more than the pain of knowing I had to get up to go to work. So somewhere in my late thirties I turned the alarm off and sat on the side of my spiritual bed with my head in my hands, regretting that extra glass of wine I had the night before. I sat there for a while deciding what to do and then proceeded to stagger around my bedroom searching for the right clothes to wear.

By my early forties I was dressed, had breakfast and had started to make my way out of the house and start the journey to work. It was at this time I found I had a flat tyre…not a good start. Then during my mid-forties, on the way to work (after said tyre was fixed), I got pulled over for speeding, ran a red light, and had a clear problem with road rage.

Now at 50 I feel like I have just arrived at work. I’m awake and I’m feeling ready to really get somewhere on this spiritual journey and maybe one day I’ll be able to come home from work, put my feet up (spiritually speaking), and sit contented at what I have achieved. Until then I just know some clown is going to come into my office and interrupt me…but that’s the way it is.
