Who do you admire?

Modern society and the media tell us who we should admire, and that generally equates to who has the most money, who has achieved more than anyone else, the person who is better than you will ever be.

We are so conditioned by modern social media as to who is deserving of our admiration that we never stop and take the blinkers off and look around.

Now I am not saying that people who have achieved wealth and fame have not worked hard or done it tough at stages. Even those born into wealth and privilege have their own personal demons to struggle with…it’s just part of being human.

What I am saying is that as a society we seem to place our admiration on the achievement of the goal rather than the struggle that got someone to achieving the goal. It’s the struggle I admire. The constant battle against your own ego, against your own inner doubts and fears. I have respect for those who fight this battle and never give up, the person who has been dealt a bad hand in life but chooses not to blame but rather sets his sights on playing the hand he is dealt.

Stop admiring the man in the stands with the opinions that garner the headlines, and start watching the man in the arena, covered in sweat and dust. The man who gets knocked down but keeps getting back up. The man who is in the moment and struggling against his greatest enemy…himself.

That is where our admiration should lie.
